A large handwoven woolen shawl. (dimensions to follow)

~ Ra ~

My latest wove .... I'd been thinking about this colourway for quite a long time. For some reason it seemed to take some time to come to fruition ... but it was worth the wait! The shawl is slightly bigger than my usual shawls but also, slightly smaller than the blankets I've been weaving recently.

Whomever is it's keeper will enjoy it in the Autumn & Winter 🍂

Handwoven on my traditional German countermarch floor loom in my studio in the Yorkshire Dales, with beautiful 100%  wool Shetland yarn with recycled silk accents. For texture and to add another dynamic, I have added a few picks of silk and metallic yarn.  This cloth is made with a 'Zero-Waste' principle & is 100% biodegradable (wool  naturally decomposes in soil in just a matter of months). Throughout the whole process I am aiming to produce high quality functional items, that are both ethical and sustainable.

Not one of my designs are the same as another, every piece is a bespoke item! Even if 2 pieces are woven in the same colour way, the design of each is completely unique.

I weave mindfully and with care for the quality of the finished product, this cloth is not only a unique piece of art but also an item that is made to last and be enjoyed for many years. An heir'loom' perhaps. This attention to detail, quality and sustainability is reflected in the price. I see my artisan livelihood as an act of resistance, choosing to work slowly in a fast world.

When I weave I allow the weaving and colours to guide me, working intuitively & without prior planning or design. Using various weaving techniques, including hemstitching, brooks bouquets & more  ... the different textures, colours & weave structures in this design happen as I am going along, each pick woven & each warp end wound, bring a new opportunity for experiment, learning & creativity.
